What is Nausea
Nausea is a feeling or sensation of unease, queasiness and discomfort in the upper stomach usually accompanied with an involuntary urge to vomit. It can be acute short lived or prolonged. Prolonged cases of nausea (and vomiting) can be traumatic and debilitating.
Causes Of Nausea
Nausea can be attributed to both physiological and physical causes on its own, feeling of nausea or vomiting is harmless but since its most likely a sign of serious illness it shouldn’t be treated with levity. It is a non-specific symptom i.e. it has many possible causes.
Some common causes of nausea include motion sickness, dizziness, migraine, fainting, or stomach infection (gastroenteritis) it can also be as a result of medications or as a symptom demonstrated in the early stages of pregnancy (morning sickness).
Basically, there are a lot of specific causes of nausea they include:
Food poisoning and gastrointestinal infections
Studies show that this accounts for over 37% of cases of nausea. A few hours after poisoned food is ingested (about 6 hours or longer) nausea occurs as a result of toxins produced by bacteria in food.
Cancer and systemic chemotherapy treatments and anaesthetic agents can sometimes induce nausea.

Studies shows that morning sickness as it is called is common during the 2nd and third trimester of pregnancy in about 80% of women. It is mild and self-limiting and it is not usually a source of concern.
Imbalance & disequilibrium
Motion sickness or vertigo can lead to nausea. It occurs usually in moving vehicles on the sea, on lifts and at great heights.
Other mild causes of nausea may include overeating, alcohol consumption emotional stress and reaction to odour or smell.
More severe causes of feelings of nausea include heart attack, concussion or brain injury, hemorrhage, brain tumours, ulcer, some forms of cancer and also due to diabetes.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
For easy diagnosis, vomiting may be attributed to patient’s age.
In children for example, nausea can easily be attributed to causes such as viral infection, food poisoning, motion sickness, overeating, blocked intestines, milk allergy and high fever.
The timing can also be a good diagnostic factor e.g. early morning nausea in middle aged sexually active women can be attributed to pregnancy. Also if it occurs immediately after a meal or shortly after, it may be due to gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), ulcer, food poisoning etc.
Contrary to the believe held by many people, nausea is not only due to problems associated with gastro intestinal tract alone but can also be caused by a number of stimuli that works via the vomiting centre in the brain giving rise to a sensation of nausea and hence coordinates the physical act of vomiting.
Concerns raised by recurrent and prolonged nausea cases include dehydration especially when accompanied by diarrhea, tearing of the lining of the oesophagus (boerhaave’s syndrome), prolonged vomiting (more than 24 hours for adults and more than few hours In infants), presence of blood in vomit, severe headache or stiff neck, lethargy, confusion or decreased alertness and severe abdominal pain.

Medications for Treatment of Nausea
There is no completely absolute treatment of nausea but choice of medication is based on situation during the nausea experience.
For example in cases of motion sickness and vertigo anti-histamines and anti-cholinergies like mecilizine and seoptamine can be used.
For migraine related nausea, medications such as metoclopramide or chloropromazine (dopamine antagonists) can be used.
When nausea is caused by gastroenteritis, drugs like ondansetron can be used as suppressants for nausea.
Pregnancy related nausea can be treated with a combination of pyridoxine and doxylamine.
Note that while there are a number of prescription and non prescription drugs that can be used to control vomiting and dizziness, none should be taken without consultation.

Stretch Exercise Can Reduce Nausea
Nausea can sometimes be as a result of a reaction to discomfort in the neck or back region. Some simple neck and back stretch exercise can help to release tension which leads to queasiness.
A neck exercise if done wrongly can have debilitating effects due to hyper-extension.
To do neck exercises rightly, tip your head forward and touch your chin to your chest. Hold for 15 seconds and tilt (do not roll) your head to the left. Holding this for 10-15 seconds then repeat for the other side.
For back exercises you can lie on your back on a yoga mat as if you are about to do a push up but instead of lifting your whole midsection, only lift your upper body. Let your back arch and stretch as you tilt your head back as far as possible with the underneath of your chin facing the ceiling.
