High Prolactin Levels: Symptoms, Causes & Natural Treatment

I think you’ll agree with me when i say:high prolactin levels

High prolactin level (hyperprolactinemia) is one of the causes of infertility in women and men.

And;

Prescription drugs such as bromocriptine (parlodel, bromergon) and cabergoline (dostinex) which are meant to resolve this problem are quite expensive, often come with various side effects and may sometimes not provide the expected solution

Well, it turns out that there are cheaper and effective natural ways to reduce high prolactin levels without causing any nasty side effects

This article broadly consider the symptoms, causes, and the natural alternatives for high prolactin treatment so that you can get pregnant.

 What is Prolactin?

Prolactin is one of the hormones that is produced in the front portion of the pituitary gland (anterior pituitary gland) which lies at the bottom of the brain. This hormone is produced both in women and men.

Apart from the anterior pituitary, other sites of prolactin production in the body include the uterus, immune cells, brain, breasts, prostate, skin and adipose tissue.

Prolactin has many different roles throughout the body.

Perhaps the most important function in women, is to encourage or enhance breast development and milk production especially during pregnancy and after delivery.

While in men, prolactin does not have any normal function.

High Prolactin Symptoms

The following are symptoms that may suggest you have high prolactin levels. It is important you do a prolactin test if you are experiencing one or more of the symptoms.

High Prolactin Symptoms in women

  • Irregular or Lack of Menstruation
  • Annovulation
  • Subfertility
  • Decreased libido
  • Galactorrhea: Milk discharge from the breast without breastfeeding
  • Hirsutism: A condition of unwanted, male-pattern hair growth in women
  • Acne (including chest acne)
  • Osteopenia: A condition in which bone mineral density is lower than normal

High Prolactin Symptoms in Men

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Decreased potency
  • Decreased libido
  • Osteopenia
  • Galactorrhea
  • Reduced muscle mass

Furthermore, In cases of prolactinoma  (pituituary tumor), additional symptoms may include:

  • Unexplained headache
  • Visual impairment
  • Seizures

Prolactin Test

Prolactin can be measured with a simple blood test drawn.

In order to get accurate results, prolactin should be drawn first thing in the morning.

The woman should have had nothing to eat from the night before and should avoid any stimulation of the breast or nipples from the day before also.

Prolactin should also be drawn early in the menstrual cycle before ovulation. This is because prolactin levels are naturally higher after ovulation.

Normal Prolactin Levels Reference Range

The normal prolactin level range in both Men and women are as follows:

  • Men: 2 – 18 ng/mL
  • Non-Pregnant Women or Non Breastfeeding Women: 2 – 29 ng/mL
  • Pregnant Women: 10 – 209 ng/mL

Note: ng/mL means nanograms per milliliter

Normal prolactin levels ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories. Some lab use different measurements or may test different specimens.Talk to your doctor about the meaning of your specific test results.

Causes of High Prolactin Levels

Broadly, High prolactin levels may be as result of the following causes.

1. Physiological Cause:

This is when high prolactin levels occur as a result of the normal functioning of the body.

  • Pregnancy
  • Breast Feeding
  • Nipple stimulation
  • Stress or exercise (especially when it is excess or extreme)
  • Some type of foods (especially foods high in protein)
  • Intercourse

2. Pharmacological Cause:

Certain drugs or medications are capable of increasing prolactin level in the body. Stopping this medications will certainly reduce prolactin levels

Examples are;

  • Drugs for Depression (Antidepressant)
  • Drugs for Mental Illness (Antipsycotic)
  • Drugs or herbs that increases estrogen levels including fenugreek, fennel seeds, and red clover

3. Pathological Cause of High Prolactin Levels

Certain type of diseases or medical conditions are causes of elevated prolactin levels. Treating this medical conditions will bring prolactin levels down

They Include;

  • Prolactinomas (Pituitary tumors) (this is often responsible for very high prolactin levels)
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Chest trauma or irritation of the chest wall (from surgical scars, shingles, or from even using over-tight bra)
  • Cirrhosis (Liver Disease)
  • Kidney disease (chronic renal failure especially in patients requiring dialysis)

4. Idiopathic Cause of Hyperprolactinaemia

This means reason for high prolactin levels is unknown

Effects of High Prolactin Levels

High Prolactin Levels and Infertility

When a non-pregnant woman has high prolactin levels, the excess prolactin blocks secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). When this occurs, there will be decrease in the production of gonadotropins such as Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH).

When FSH and LH production is suppressed, this in-turn affects the level of estrogen and progesterone and can result in any of these cases.

Lets look at the three cases:

In severe cases, women with high prolactin levels will experience a stop in ovulation (anovulation). When this occurs, The frequency of menstrual cycles decreases (oligomenorrhea), and the cycle may even cease (amenorrhea) altogether

In less severe cases, high prolactin levels may only disrupt ovulation once in a while. As a result, ovulation may not occur at regular intervals or ovulation will take longer time to occur.

In mildest cases involving high prolactin levels, the woman may ovulate regularly but will not produce enough of the progesterone hormone after ovulation.

This is known as a luteal phase defect.

Deficiency in the amount of progesterone produced after ovulation may result in a uterine lining that is less able to have an embryo implant. Some women with this problem may see their period come a short time after ovulation

High prolactin level is the reason why women who are breastfeeding do not see their period (lactational amenorrhea) and therefore do not often become pregnant. As time goes on however, the prolactin level do not stay as high with breastfeeding and the woman may start to ovulate.

Furthermore, Raised or elevated levels of prolactin may result in some symptoms of estrogen deficiency, such as loss of libido, dryness of the vagina etc.

High Prolactin Levels and Weight Gain

Studies have shown that high prolactin levels can cause weight gain. However it is not clear if it is a result of its stimulation of the metabolic formation of fats (lipogenesis) or due to its disruption of the central nervous system

It is important to monitor BMI in patients with elevated prolactin levels and to introduce measures aiming to maintain an ideal weight and reduce other problems associated with overweight

Natural Treatment for High Prolactin Levels

[sociallocker id=”963″]

Researches have shown that one of the major function of Dopamine, a hormone produced in the brain is to inhibit (hold back) prolactin secretion.

As a result, drugs that mimic the action of dopamine are therefore useful in treating patients with high serum prolactin concentrations.

This means that you can reduce the high prolactin levels in your body simply by increasing the dopamine produced in the brain.

Many people trying to lower prolactin levels choose to use the prescription drugs Bromocriptine and Dostinex (Cabergoline), although these drugs may be effective at suppressing prolactin, but they are expensive and many people experience a host of nasty side effects whilst using them.

In contrast to prescription prolactin inhibiting drugs, natural prolactin inhibitors are very cheap, will produce no side effect in majority of users and are very effective.

Vitamins and Supplements that reduce high prolactin levels

Vitamin B6:

This is vital nutrient involved in metabolism of amino acids and in synthesis of neurotransmitters such as dopamine.

Apart from reducing prolactin levels when taken on high dosage, Vitamin B6 also has the following capabiities

  • Reduce high blood pressure.
  • Improve mood and combat depression
  • Lower blood sugar levels in diabetics
  • Act as an effective calcium channel blocker

To lower prolactin, the recommended dose of Vitamin B6 is between 300mg to 1000mg per day in divided dose.

S-Adenosyl methionine (SAM-e):

This is mood and brain function boosting, liver detoxifying and joint strengthening chemical that is found naturally in the body and can be produced in the laboratory as supplements.

Various studies show that SAM-e is a cheap and safe prolactin inhibitor. It may be that it is by raising dopamine and lowering prolactin that SAM-e exerts its mood boosting, anti-depressant effects

As a result of its ability to detoxify the liver, SAM-e regulates estrogen levels while lowering prolactin

Recommended dosage for lowering prolactin level is 400mg to 1200mg on daily basis.

Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is one of the most important lipid-soluble antioxidant nutrient. It has a way of preventing prolactin level from rising and rarely causes side effects.

When using Vitamin E as a prolactin inhibitor, It is recommended to take 300 to 400 IU per day of natural vitamin E or 300mg to 400mg as the case may be

Herbs to Lower Prolactin Levels

Vitex (Chasteberry):

This is a special type of herb that is mainly used for raising progesterone levels and balancing progesterone to estrogen ratio.

It also promotes ovulation, improves timing of the menstrual cycles, nourishes the pituitary gland and helps lengthen the luteal phase.

However, due to its dopaminergic effects it can reduce prolactin and increase dopamine but only when taken in higher doses

Recommended dose of vitex for high prolactin is 400mg three times daily. You can buy vitex here

Mucuna pruriens:

This is also known as velvet bean, is natural source of amino acid L-DOPA, from which dopamine is produced. It is common in Africa and tropical parts of Asia

Mucuna pruriens is available as supplements in both powdered and capsule forms which are more preferable.

However you can prepare the powder yourself by following this steps: Harvest the seeds, rinse properly, dry, and grind into powder form

Recommended dosage of mucuna pruriens for high prolactin is half teaspoon of the powder daily with honey OR 400mg of the capsule as a daily dose

Foods that reduce high prolactin levels

Eating a healthy, balanced diet will help reduce high prolactin levels

A healthy, balanced diet is rich in whole “natural” and unprocessed foods. It is especially high in plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, seeds and nuts. Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants that protect the body cells from damaging. They also help raise serotonin levels in the brain

You should consider eating more of;

Proteins: They are very rich in amino acids, which are required for the production of dopamine in the brain. Include foods such as fish, eggs, beans, cheese, legumes, chicken, turkey and red meat to supply your body with adequate amino acids

And;

Fruits such as;

Banana: Ripe bananas are a major source of tyrosine (an amino acid neuron that helps regulate and stimulate dopamine production), as they continue to ripen and become sweeter, their tyrosine content becomes more high.

Apple: Apples are high in quercetin, an antioxidant that helps prevent cancer and also triggers production of dopamine. This justifies the old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”

Watermelon: Watermelon juice is fat free and loaded with vitamins A, B6, and C. Vitamin B6 is used by the body to manufacture neurotransmitters such as serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine. Vitamin C also enhances the immune system while protecting the body from free radicals.

Other fruits include; strawberry, blueberry and prunes.

Final Thoughts

High prolactin level is one of the leading cause of infertility in couples today. Just a slight decrease in the prolactin level can improve your chances of getting pregnant.

If you notice any of the symptoms, doing a prolactin test will help confirm so that you can resolve the possible causes as soon as possible and start the natural treatment

An effective way to reduce prolactin in women is to combine Vitamin B6, SAM-e, Vitamin E, Vitex and to eat more of the foods mentioned above.

While in men, Vitamin B6, SAM-e, Vitamin E and Mucuna pruriens works better [/sociallocker]

  • Hello Mr Ife, Thanks so much for this knowledge you impact in me, how ever i want to ask, how long do i have to take VITEX before the prolactin is reduced or hormones are balanced? secondly pls, can i do the castor oil therapy while menstruating?

    • Hey Vera,
      Thanks for reading.
The time duration for taking vitex depends on a whole lot of factors such as how well the body respond to herbs, nature of the problem etc. For high prolactin cases, vitex should be combined with other supplements and taken for at least 2months (on the average) for notable result.

As regards castor oil therapy during menstruation, it is NOT recommended since it is capable of causing heavier flow. If you are trying to get pregnant, STOP castor oil therapy or fertility massage after ovulation

  • Hi dr, i hav been suffering frm high level of prolactin for a long time. Series of test have been carried out by qualified doctors n bromergon recommended severally but the problem still continue. I hav read your natural remedies i am going to try them. But i want u to contact me for more discussion. Thanks n God bless for having the childless in mind.

    • Hello Ajiri,
Nice you intend trying natural remedies. Please mail (contact @ naturalhealthbag.com) and let us discuss whatever is bothering you.

  • u re blessed, u re realy educating women to understand their health, with this one can do a lot of to help her herself, instead of Hospital all the time. tnx

  • In your post you said two completely opposite things. First is cause of high prolactin could be a diet high in proteins.
Second is you suggest to consume more protein rich foods to reduce prolactin levels. Where is the logic here?

    • Hi,
Its nice you observed that. Eating food high in protein is a physiological cause of high prolactin level (occurring as a result of normal functioning of the body). It doesn’t mean that you should stop eating foods high in protein or stop having intercourse or stop breastfeeding or stop exercising. What i’m trying to say is that there is high tendency of testing positive to high prolactin level (often temporary surge) if you go for a test immediately after eating high protein rich food because prolactin secretion is pulsatile, thats why it also increases with sleep, stress, pregnancy etc.

  • Thank you for this info, is very complete, i would like to know more about the Physiological Causes, as in chinese medicine and biodiscodification the emotions are an important part of the unbalance in the body.
    Thank you!
    Paula

  • I’ ve been taking homeopathic tinture of agnus castus for more than six months, and it regulated the period perfectly, but stoped taking it and again amenorrea appeared. So Mr. Ife you wouldnt recomend fenugreek? I want to regulate my hormones naturaly! Thank you very much!

  • I am really inspired by this write up, u are highly blessed moreover how long will this therapy work for me, mine has been since 2008 so what can I do, since I’m tired of using parlodel and primolut, I pray this works.

    • Hi Onye,
Duration of therapy often varies with people but you should notice a great deal of improvement after a month’s use.

      • Hi ife, hv been having discharge from my breast for almost a year nw. Hv done test on my prolactine but came out low, my gyna place me on parlodel which works for smtime and came back. • Hi,
Sorry to hear that…Even i had the same problem and my doctor adviced me to take Gabergolin 0.25mg on day 7,9 and 11…..
I got pregnant within 3 month,,, please try this.. If you had any confusion you may ask this to your doctor,,, My prolactin level was 8 before.. so i took this tablet for 3 days,,All the very best for your pregnancy in advance..

  • Hi, thank you for all of the information on treatment options. Very good article, helpfully summarizing the options.

However, these are very high recommended dosage rates for B6 compared to what I have read elsewhere, and if taken for sustained periods (1 yr) can cause nerve damage. Am I misunderstanding the dosage units, or can you clarify?

For B6, online sources say you should not exceed 100 mg/day, unless under direction from a doctor, and that recommended daily amount is 1.3 mg/day. (https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminB6-Consumer/#h8). For B6, 300 to 1000 mg/day is recommended in this article.

I do know that you can take large amounts of B12 without worry of harm. Perhaps this dosage is more appropriate for B12?

    • Hi Kirsten,
From the article you sited, complications may occur after taking high doses for a long time… after a year. Furthermore, the writer pointed out that 100mg daily doesn’t apply to people using Vitamin b6 for certain medical conditions under a doctor’s supervision, only to those taking it as daily supplements

    • Hi I want to know vitex and same are available in India . if I want from you then how much money it will cost me please let me know thanks.

    • Hi Tolani,
I actually didn’t recommend Bromergon in this article. However, the course of treatment depends on well your body is responding to the drug (for instance, you can use for a month and then do a test to see how well you’ve improved). Please work with your doctor to determine that.

  • pls doctor ife where can I get the Sam- e and the vitex. cuz I took bromergon and check my prolactin level last month and its normal, bt I discover DAT milk still comes out from my breast. pls wat can I do. this is my email address, Ajokemide30@yahoo.com. tanx.

    • Hi Ajoke,
Normalized prolactin level is a good sign. SAM e and vitex are available in pharmaceutical stores or you can buy online. You should avoid nipple stimulation, and other physiological causes for a while so as to stop the milk.

  • I’ve been consuming protein bars and protein drinks to control weight and increase muscle mass. Are these products increasing prolactin production in my body?

Thanks for sharing such a good article. I’ll use it immediately. I am trying to get pregnant for two months but it was in vain. my prolactine(ECL) amount was 49.7 ng/ml . after repeating the test ( PRL-PEG ) it shows 19.9 ng/ml which probably due to its inactive form.I want to use vitamin B6 and E arbitrary and without telling my doctor. can it helps me this time? please email me your reply.

    • Hi Emily, Thanks for stopping by. Your breast discharge may be as a result of the drugs you are taking (metformin) as some studies show that metformin can augment low milk supply. I would advise you talk to your doctor about it.

  • Thanks for this article. Super helpful. It’s hard when a physician tells you your levels are high and they need to come down, but not what it means. Does that make sense? This information was what I was looking for to make life changes rather than add medications with their own side effects booklet. (The manufacturer had to reduce the print and put it in a small book – booklet.)

I cannot thank you enough for the clarity you’ve provided. All the best ;D

    • Hello Eyvette, Your words are kind and encouraging. Shoot me a mail incase you have any question. Thanks for reading through

  • Hello Mr. IFE OLUWATUYI,

I found I have high prolactin level last week. I am trying for a baby (already got one child). I was pregnant 3 times within last 18 months, but lost the babies very early unfortunately and it makes me so sad. I am 41 (I know the time factor too), but my doctor tells me I have still enoug eggs (like I was 30 and good levels of progesteron and estrogen) my problem is very high prolactine. I am not sure why is so high. I experience milk disgarge sometimes (it always appeared after miscarrage). On the other hand my sex drive is rather high, I lost some weight due to excercise (I have an atlethic figure, not skinny and not fat) I do not have acne at all … but I have great tendency to stress a lot, which I am trying to control without much succes …. I have a few hard years behind me. I started taking vitex drops, vitamin B6, E, Zinc etc. Am I doing a good thing? In past I was taking Milk Thistle herb for my Liver … but then I found it cause higher prolactin … is that true? Tjank you for your web page and for your time. Iva from the Czech Republic, Europe

  • Thank you so much for this thorough and informative article.
I am a 64 year old Male and was diagnosed with a macro Prolactinoma 6 months ago and prescribed Cabergoline twice weekly to hopefully reduce the tumour which is close to my optic nerve and lower Prolactin and Increase my Testosterone from 2nm/ml .

I currently do not have any visual issues although as I was diagnosed with type2 Diabetes at the same time I do occasionally experience mild blurred vision but this could also be due to chronic UTI’s and suspected Viral Arthritis .

I have been extremely reluctant to start the Cabergoline treatment despite strong encouragement from my Endo . This is mostly due to the possibility of nasal leakage of CBF if my tumor size reduces . I have experienced some bone loss throughout my body particularly my jaw bones so I am naturally very apprehensive about the risk of having surgery to remove the tumor and to correct any leakage. Also I am very fearful of the common side effects of treatment ie Nausea and dizziness. . This week I am currently experiencing Vertigo and nausea ,Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) which at its peak was making me feel sucidal.Fortunately this is now receding and I suspect it was due to a Virus

Because I am not experiencing any serious symptoms from the prolactinoma ,(other than those associated with low testosterone levels which I can live with) I suppose I have decided to carry on trying to avoid the need for treatment and surgery. Your article about self help to reduce levels of prolactin is an absolute godsend and was never mentioned by my Doctor or Endocrinologist.
Your article has given me a little Ray of Hope to hang on to and something that I can do myself to hopefully improve my health. Thank you so much
    Johnny

I am wondering whether you know anything about standardized extract vitex. The one I have is 80g standardized extract to 0.6% acubin. What would be the equivalent to 400mg x 3 of non standardized vitex?

    Thank you in advance!

After carrying out a test. The doctor said that it is high prolactin level 19.7, so after taken the prescribed drug. Like bromocriptine and other drug my period return back to normal after one month later the days of the period reduce again. And breast milk is still coming out of my breast. My question now is that I want my period to resort back to normal and the breast milk to stop coming out. I am single. Pls I want to know if I should take the vitamin & supplements, food, herb and fruit together. Or should choose either herb and for fit the vitamin & supplement. Thanks and God bless you.
