Skin Aftercare during Micro-Needling Recovery Time

The normal micro-needling recovery time is 24 hours to 2-3 days, but it depends on your case. You are free to wear makeup and even go back to your job after this time frame. However, as per a recent study, it takes a much longer time, i.e., at least 4-6 weeks (depending upon the treatment extent), for a new session.

Micro-needling is super reliable, and gives visible results in no time. Being the most versatile treatment, this collagen induction treatment is a non-invasive and quick treatment that has negligible side-effects. Even research suggests that micro-needling is far better than other skin treatments like laser or other chemical peels.

Having done the treatment myself, I know exactly what happens to the skin. Therefore, I have tried to combine all the information for good aftercare during and after the micro-needling recovery time.

This article covers the healing process in the first week of micro-needling recovery. I will also share all the skincare regime and precautions that you must follow after the treatment. It will aid in keeping your skin hydrated and perfectly nourished.

So, let’s get started!

Healing Journey of Skin in the First Week of Micro-Needling Recovery

Immediately after the treatment, your skin will feel quite irritated. So, you must let the skin breathe and avoid makeup. This will speed up the healing process.

Days 1 to 3 after treatment

The treated skin gets quite sensitive, dry, and tight. You may even experience a sunburn-like effect. Thus, you should treat it with extra care, beginning with gentle cleansing with cold water. Make sure that you don’t pat dry it before 4 hours of your treatment completion.

While redness is quite common, many people also experience a little bruising or swelling that may last for that week. If it persists, don’t delay and immediately reach out to your dermatologist.

General tips to follow during these days

  1. Make use of mineral makeup (if need be), that too only after 24 hours. Ensure that you clean your brushes thoroughly before using them on your skin.
  2. No strenuous exercises should be performed that increase sweating.
  3. Avoid taking steam baths, jacuzzis or saunas, for at least 48 hours. This time may increase if your skin is bruised.
  4. Keep your sleeping position such that you place your head on the risen end of  the bed’s back. It will prevent the swelling from increasing, and the pain will subside too.

Days 2 to 5 after treatment

You will witness that your skin starts peeling and a lot of dryness and flaking taking over. Don’t panic; it is nothing to worry about! It is all occurring because of elevated skin cell production.

General tips to follow during these days

  1. No need to scratch or scrub your flaking skin. Let your skin flake off on its own.
  2. Moisturization is extremely crucial at such a time. Consult your dermatologist to know which moisturizer to use.

Days 5 to 7 after treatment

Notice if your skin feels irritated. If not, it is probably healing, and you will witness visible results too.

General tips to follow during these days

  1. Follow your normal skincare regime to witness more skin improvement until your next micro-needling session.
  2. Schedule your next micro-needling treatment along with a custom skincare plan.

Time taken to witness visible results after micro-needling recovery

Micro-needling is used for all skin types to curb three types of main issues – aging, scars, and skin’s well-being.

  1. Anti-aging results

All superficial skin concerns such as fine lines, sun damage, skin laxity, wrinkles, and brown or dark spots take about 3- 4 weeks to show visible results. You will notice that the skin will start to tighten, and after 3 treatment appointments, the problems will start to reduce.

Not only this, your skin cell turnover and elastin and collagen production will also increase.

  1. Acne or other scar reduction results

Be it face or body scars, this treatment will cure all stretch marks, acne scars, and other burns/trauma/keloid/surgical scars within 6-8 treatment appointments. Thus, you will witness a new and even collagen layer replacing the old one.

For best results, you need to wait for at least 6 months to witness visible changes.

  1. General skin health results

Micro-needling gives you healthier-looking skin in no time. From uneven skin texture, dry skin to uneven tone, you can feel a new supple skin in just 7-14 days’ time. In just one month, your general skin health will improve.

Best skincare regime to follow after 1 week of micro-needling recovery

If you think that your skin has completely recovered, you are wrong! Your skin will be in a vulnerable state and require your special care and attention.

The given regime is what I precisely followed and will suggest the same for you! But you must consult your dermatologist first, as everyone’s skin is different. Also, make sure that you strictly adhere to all the suggested instructions.

  1. Cleaning

Using a mind and gentle cleanser is essential to keep your skin protected from the sun. Keep your hands clean while touching the skin. Also, make it a point to use Cetaphil or an antioxidant serum rich in vitamin E and C in the morning and night.

It would be best if you used lukewarm water to cleanse your face for about 72 hours after treatment. Then, you should gently tap your skin to dry. At any point, don’t ever use a powdered cleaning brush or Clarisonic till your skin heals after one week of your treatment.

  1. No Extensive Scrubbing

Scrubbing for one week is strictly prohibited. After that, depending upon your skin’s health, you can use a gentle scrub that doesn’t comprise the following elements:

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids
  • Vitamin C
  • Retinol (Vitamin A)
  • Beta Hydroxy Acid
  1. Moisturization

Hydrating your skin is vital to keep it balanced and super healthy. It is because micro-needling leads to drier skin than before. Hyaluronic acid is an ingredient that lets your skin stay nourished and restores its lost balance easily.

  1. Protection

Your skin specialist will use UVA/UVB broad-spectrum sunscreen to avoid sun damage after the session. Make sure you opt for a chemical-free sunscreen of SPF 30 or above after one week of healing. Make it a point to protect your skin by using it extensively until the next session.

Additional precautions to help in faster micro-needling recovery

If you follow the given 8 precautions religiously, your skin will surely revive its lost charm. Additionally, the micro-needling recovery time will be reduced as well.

  1. No smoking or alcohol

Tobacco products can lower the production of collagen and increase blood pressure, resulting in high recovery time. Thus, during micro-needling sessions, you must completely prohibit smoking.

Even alcohol flushes away water and many essential nutrients along with it, leaving you dehydrated. Thus, you must abstain from drinking alcohol during the micro-needling recovery to keep your skin hydrated.

  1. Say no to tanning beds

Tanning beds are as bad as direct sunlight. As sun can damage your skin, tanning beds can also add to this harm and cause dangerous skin side-effects. Thus, it would help if you refrained from using tanning beds, especially while your skin is recovering from micro-needling.

  1. Load your diet with fruits and vegetables

Remember, your diet is the key to getting vibrant and naturally moisturized skin. Therefore, it is your responsibility to enrich your diet with fresh seasonal veggies and fruits. You can take them in the form of soups, salads, or even create yummy smoothie bowls.

  1. Say no to processed foods

Processed foods are refined to their core and consuming them in high volumes takes a toll on your body. From fast-food meals to cereals, all processed foods are bad for the skin and make it drier with reduced nutrients, especially during your skin’s recovery.

  1. High water and protein intake

Water regulates the collagen production of your body. Thus, you must incorporate 8-10 glasses of water, be it infused, juice, or plain water. This will help in keeping your skin rejuvenated internally and help in its speedy recovery.

Did you know collagen is a type of protein? When you include high-protein items in your diet, your skin is bound to glow. So, take eggs, fishes, chicken, soybean, and cheese into your diet and witness a massive change in your skin.

Some Last Words

Micro-needling recovery time is a crucial phase and requires extra-care of your treated skin. I have shared my personal experience during the 1st week after the session to make you aware of the treatment.

Let your skin heal with all the above-mentioned skincare regimes and precautionary steps. They are super-efficient and will definitely clear out your skin for good.
